Local authorities have their crucial role in the carrying out of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU. The inclusion of municipalities is key for turning the EU Council Presidency in a national cause, and for having the messages of Bulgaria formulated and jointly owned by Bulgarian citizens. This was said by the caretaker Deputy Prime Minister for the Preparation of the Presidency of the Council of the EU – 2018 Deniza Slateva during a working meeting with representatives of the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria.
The caretaker government remains a trustworthy partner of local authorities and we will seek the best ways to realize the opportunities of the Presidency by Bulgarian cities, said Deputy Prime Minister Slateva during the meeting. She announced that the partnership with the municipalities is foreseen in several respects of the preparation, which include event organization, participation in the communication program, and initiatives for promoting Bulgarian culture, history and nature.
As priority topics for the debate at the municipal level during the Bulgarian Presidency, the cooperation in the Danube and Black Sea regions, improvement of the EU regional development policies and digitalization of European regions were pointed out.
Bulgarian municipalities are united in their ambition to participate actively in carrying out the Presidency, assured the Mayor of Gabrovo Tanya Hristova. She underlined that local authorities possess the necessary experience and capacity to support the successful conduction of the Presidency and hence let our European partners get acquainted with the achievements and image of Bulgaria. According to her, the Bulgarian Presidency will allow for an exchange of good practices and will open new channels for cooperation at the European level.
The Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Justice, and presidents of the Supreme Court of Cassation and the Supreme Administrative Court presented their positions on the judicial reform to ambassadors of EU member-states and the United States.
After his visit to Vietnam, on the way to Bulgaria, Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski paid a short visit to the city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan. There, the Prime Minister met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Rustam Azimov. Mr. Oresharski and Mr. Azimov discussed bilateral relations between Bulgaria and Uzbekistan , with a an emphasis on economic issues. The two discussed the upcoming meeting of the Joint Committee of the intergovernmental Commission and political consultations in June this year. Discussed was also the possibility the Bulgarian Prime Minister to visit Uzbekistan before the end of the year.
