PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV AND THE EIB PRESIDENT DISCUSSED THE COOPERATION ON THE CONNECTIVITY OF THE WESTERN BALKANS

01.02.2018

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and European Investment Bank President Werner Hoyer discussed the possibilities for cooperation on connectivity projects between the Western Balkans and the European Union.

During their meeting in Brussels, the Prime Minister advocated the need for a partnership that will lead to results in support of the development of the region. Borissov mentioned as  examples the initiatives of the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He pointed out that the summit with the leaders of the Western Balkan countries, organized by the World Bank in Sofia in December 2017, resulted in concrete financial commitments. There will also be talks on the subject in London with the EBRD leadership.

Werner Hoyer commented that the interest in the region is great and the EIB considers digital connectivity a top priority. He made the commitment, on behalf of the Bank's management, to help for the success of the Bulgarian Presidency and its priorities, for which he expressed appreciation.

EIB is the bank with which we work perfectly in Bulgaria. We will be honored if you are our partners in respect to the Western Balkans. The connectivity of infrastructure in the region is the foundation for its development, as well as for the European perspective of the countries, Prime Minister Borissov said. He expressed his readiness to inform the EIB management about the individual infrastructure needs of each country and stressed the dire importance, both for the region and Europe as a whole, of the trans-European corridors whose construction needs additional funding.
