PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV: THE POLITICAL ELITE ON THE BALKANS UNDERSTOOD THAT THE ONLY PATH FORWARD IS THE ONE TO EU AND NATO

13.04.2018

The political elite on the Balkans understood that the only path forward is the one to the EU and NATO. This was stated by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov at a joint press conference in Sofia with the Chairmanship of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina Denis Zvizdic. Borissov stressed the need to work rapidly to use the momentum of the last few months. “I hope that with common efforts we will convince our colleagues in Europe that we cannot speak about accession of the countries from the Western Balkans in 20 years. We have to give them a perspective, and it should be real,” the Bulgarian Prime Minister said. He recalled that a year ago talks on the topic of European integration of the countries of the region seemed impossible, whereas today they are the focus of attention.

Dennis Zvizdic thanked the Bulgarian Prime Minister for setting the topic as a priority for the rotating Presidency. “This gives new hope for us and generates new energy,” he said, and added that Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue to work hard on the path to joining the EU and NATO.

The two highlighted the importance of implementing infrastructure projects in the region, stressing that it will result in economic growth for all countries. Borissov added that each of the parties involved should put efforts to complete their part on the construction of the transport connections. It was pointed out that the idea about the creation of a common aviation association among the states on the peninsula will be discussed to provide for air transport links among the Balkan capitals.
