TOMISLAV DONTCHEV: THE EU NEEDS A CLEAR VISION OF THE MAIN POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC PRIORITIES FOR EUROPE 2030

01.02.2018

We need to set the basic political and economic parameters of Europe 2030. It is our responsibility to hold an open debate on how the EU can overtake its competitors and establish itself as a global player. We should not just strive to close the budget gaps triggered by the new challenges ahead of us. This was said by Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Dontchev in Brussels in front of members of the European Committee of the Regions. According to him, the question about the future of European Cohesion Policy and the next Multiannual Financial Framework, that in practice stands for the EU budget, is an indication of the future of the Union itself and a sign of how much the Member States believe in the European project.

Dontchev emphasized that the Cohesion Policy is among the key achievements of the EU and thanks to this policy, the EU has not only achieved a lot in terms of cohesion among European regions but has also overcome the difficult period of the global economic crisis. He also underlined that during the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council, Bulgaria’s main priority is to be a balanced moderator during the discussions on the meaning of European solidarity and the need to simplify the rules, but at the same time our country strives to be a “catalyst” of ideas leading to a strong and effective Cohesion Policy and thus to strong and prosperous regions.
