PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV: THE BULGARIAN BORDER GUARD MODEL WORKS WELL

13.08.2018

Bulgaria is virtually the only country that is not vulnerable to migrants up to this moment. The Bulgarian model we have implemented works well and I hope it will be taken up in Europe. This was stated by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov after an inspection of the border at Malko Tarnovo. The Prime Minister noted that the pressure on the border is large but the control is strong, and the agreement with Turkey works very well. Borissov pointed out that over 2500 people have been returned to their countries of origin for approximately a year.

The Prime Minister announced that as of Monday, 40 additional border guards will be posted, as well as an additional 50 officials from the special services. Seventy new cars are to be purchased while 180 were recently received. The border guard officials are fully equipped, including with the necessary clothing.

"I am pleased with the many efforts that are being made. Bulgarians have valiant and well-prepared border guards," Prime Minister Borissov said. He noted that there are about 200 migrants in the centers in the country. "We all sleep peacefully and we take this for granted, and it is not - we owe it to all border guards who protect the border around the clock," the Prime Minister noted and added that the most deserving will be rewarded.

Asked about Dimitar Zhelyazkov, the Prime Minister commented: "We contacted the Turkish counterparts yesterday. We spoke with their Minister of Interior and he was arrested within an hour.” Currently, work on the extradition papers is underway.
