PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV HAD A BILATERAL MEETING WITH EUROPEAN COMMISSION VICE-PRESIDENT FRANS TIMMERMANS IN BRUSSELS

13.12.2018

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov had a bilateral meeting with European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans in Brussels, where he attended the regular European Council meeting. "I thanked him for the good report within the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism," the Prime Minister told journalists before the start of the Council.

He said he informed the European Commission Vice-President on the results in the fight against smuggling, providing a list of the successes in capturing smuggled cigarettes, weapons, and the related arrests. The Prime Minister pointed out that, in view of the current situation in Europe, for Bulgaria it would be best to enter Schengen only by air, because most of the countries in the Schengen area have restored their border control at land borders, whereas opening the seas borders will not have any tangible impact for Bulgaria because the Black Sea does not provide transport access to any other EU country apart from Romania.

"I will only plead for an unique approach in respect to relations with the security services of the United Kingdom, because to me they are among the best in the world and we need them in the fight against smuggling and terrorism," Prime Minister Boyko Borissov commented in relation to the withdrawal of the UK from the EU. He reminded that at the end of last month the leaders of the member states approved the agreement on the United Kingdom leaving the Union. "We focused the attention of entire Europe, we came, we made a decision, we signed, this topic should be over," Prime Minister Borissov said.
