PRIME MINISTERS BORISSOV AND TSIPRAS SIGNED A JOINT DECLARATION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RAILWAY CONNECTION "THESSALONIKI - KAVALA - ALEXANDROUPOLIS - BURGAS - VARNA - RUSE"

02.11.2018

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras signed a joint declaration in Evksinograd on the development of the Thessaloniki-Kavala-Alexandroupolis-Burgas-Varna-Ruse railway connection. The document envisages the creation of a joint project company to work on the implementation of the next phase of the project. By the middle of December, an Intergovernmental Framework Agreement on Railway Development will also be drafted.

The start of the project was the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the transport ministers of Bulgaria and Greece in Kavala in September 2017, during an official visit by the government delegation from Bulgaria headed by Prime Minister Borissov. The project is of great strategic and economic importance. It aims to develop a sustainable dual track axis, an electrified railway corridor with a modern ERTMS rail traffic management system connecting the Bulgarian and Greek ports. The construction of the railway connection is part of the larger project for a multimodal cargo corridor connecting the Aegean and the Black Sea "Sea2Sea".

The joint declaration signed today also foresees the possibility for expanding the scope of the Memorandum of Understanding by increasing the intermodality of the project, including the further development of the Alexandroupolis-Burgas road connection.
