Conflict in Israel: no need for stricter measures

17.10.2023

The measures that are currently applied in Bulgaria due to the conflict in Israel are adequate and do not need to be changed. Security measures are higher only in definite locations that are seen as riskier: airports, railway stations, synagogues, the Embassy of the State of Israel and places where there are Jewish communities or Israeli tourists. The danger for all other institutions is rated the lowest possible. The Bulgarian government is capable of giving a fast response should the situation change.

That conclusion was reached by today’s meeting of the Security Council to the Prime Minister. The meeting discussed detailed update reports of the Ministry of Interior, the State Agency for National Security, the State Intelligence Agency and the Defense Intelligence Service.

As of now, the information about a Bulgarian citizen (a woman) who is held as a hostage in Gaza has not been confirmed. We are checking it carefully, Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov said as he referred to media publications.

In his view, the Islamic organization Hezbollah does not show signs of upsurge  for the time being and currently the situation is a little bit calmer compared to what it was a few days ago. “Serious diplomatic negotiations are underway, including such at a very high political level. There exist all kinds of risks but which of these will materialize hinges on the outcome of the diplomatic efforts”, the Prime Minister said. He hopes that the situation will settle down while he does not underrate the probability of drastic escalation. The government is prepared to face such developments as well.

Today the Security Council considered and approved the annual report (2022) on the national security in the Republic of Bulgaria. The report will be forwarded to the Council of Ministers for official approval and next it will be submitted to the National Assembly.
