25.11.2019

"I am convinced that US visas will be removed. The visa waiver program with Canada is a clear example that we are not creating any problems. President Donald Trump could remain in the hearts of Bulgarians for many years if he made this gesture. He promised me to work actively on this and that is why I expect the focus of our next meeting to be on the visas. This is what Prime Minister Boyko Borissov told Bulgarian media in Washington after meeting the US President Donald Trump at the White House.

The Prime Minister told media in Washington that during his meeting with the US president, he had done what he needed to and had succeeded in protecting Bulgaria's energy interests. Borissov said that in a joint written document it is noted that the United States welcome Bulgaria's aspirations for a strategic gas hub, providing an opportunity for our neighboring countries to achieve real diversification. "Currently, Belene is a 100% Bulgarian plant with a 100% Bulgarian owned reactors. And in 10 years, Kozloduy will have many sites. This week, US nuclear experts are coming to our country, they will go see Belene and the reactors. They will also get acquainted with the whole infrastructure of Kozloduy NPP, Prime Minister Borissov also said.

"President Trump is very firm and he defends his interest. And I was firm enough to offer him options in which our interest is to be protected. I told him - if we are not the Balkan center for gas diversification and trade, how can I explain to the Bulgarians that Turkey and Greece can do that, and we cannot?! And what should we to do with our gas transmission system or the reversible US compressors we bought? This is when the US President agreed with me," Prime Minister Borissov said.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister added that US Vice President Michael Pence will surely come to our country. "I think President Trump will come to Bulgaria as well. Because we are emerging not only as the most stable, not only as the most balanced country among all our neighbors, but we have never once said anything against a third country, ”Boyko Borissov was certain.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the strategic cooperation agreement between Bulgaria and the US means for us to work equally well in the fields of economy, industry, IT, education, culture, defense, media freedom, the rule of law.

During his meeting with Trump, the Bulgarian Prime Minister presented him with a card for an honorary member of the Bulgarian Golf Association. "He was impressed with our golf courses," said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.
