Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov: Bulgaria is a racer in the development of AI-based models

15.01.2024

The race to develop Artificial Intelligence-based models is picking up speed. It is expected that in a couple of years the economies in the world will be either users or non-users of AI. Success will largely hinge on the extent of our integration into this type of platforms. This was stated by Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov at the presentation of the latest project in the field of Artificial Intelligence of the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology INSAIT with the University of Sofia.

We are on the racetrack where the future depends on the rapid implementation of technologies and their use in the best possible way, the Prime Minister said. Acad. Nikolai Denkov stressed that this subject is now a priority at government level. It is a huge advantage to have your own technology, whose development can be tailored to the tasks that are important for our country, he said and specially underscored the Government’s support for the development of the INSAIT. Further, the Prime Minister said that this year’s budget will support the development of a computing center that specializes in Artificial Intelligence that is yet another opportunity to develop this type of knowledge on a global level.

Acad. Nikolai Denkov expressed gratitude to Prof. Martin Vechev, Scientific Director of the INSAIT, and his team and to the INSAIT’s Swiss partners.

BgGPT that was launched today by the INSAIT is the first state-of-the-art generative AI for the Bulgarian language. It has been created for the Bulgarian institutions and public and private organizations and access will be free. As part of the INSAIT strategy to create an open and publicly accessible Artificial Intelligence for the benefit of society, BgGPT is specially trained for the specifics of the Bulgarian language and this will enable the development of applications and solutions for the benefit of Bulgarian education, business, healthcare, public administration and other sectors. In its first version, the model was trained on over 3 billion sentences and consists of 7 billion parameters. BgGPT will be fully available on 3 March. To further develop the shared use of the model and its applications, the INSAIT is launching a series of outreach meetings and events with the tech community.
