Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov: Accession to Schengen to be credited to successful endeavors on our part to bring back confidence in Bulgaria at top level

31.03.2024

Following the accession to the European Union, this is the greatest achievement for the Bulgarian diplomacy, institutions and politicians as we managed to unite and to bring back confidence in Bulgaria at top level. Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov addressed thus the guests to the ceremony at Sofia Airport held a few hours after the country officially joined the Schengen area by air and sea.

“Schengen is not just a fence along the border. Schengen is the confidence placed that Bulgaria can protect the EU borders and that the country has definitely embarked on the European path, will respect the rule of law and will not let people who break the law prosper in Bulgaria but will penalize them,” Acad. Nikolai Denkov pointed out. The Prime Minister expressed his hope that any subsequent government would work to save and to strengthen the confidence that was placed in the country in recent months.

It is up to politicians in Bulgaria to raise the topic as a common goal to make free land border crossings across the Schengen area for the people of the country starting from the beginning of next year. I, personally, am a moderate optimist, the Prime Minister said further. Acad. Nikolai Denkov specially thanked the institutions as he emphasized the role of the cabinet and of the Parliament. Had it not been for the passage of legislation and of amendments to the Constitution, Schengen would not have materialized, Acad. Nikolai Denkov said. The Prime Minister thanked specially the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel. “We were a team in this effort. If we were not sticking close together, this would not have materialized,” Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov concluded.
